Streaming, on the other hand, refers to the normal flow of data as it travels to someone's desktop computer from a server through a network connection. A number of websites offer live streaming, and different options also exist for moving video across a home network. One example is through the use of several digital media receivers (DMRs) that work with the Windows Media Connect file-sharing protocol. The problem with these systems, however, is that they work best over an Ethernet connection or a Wireless G or N connection whose speed is at least 54 megabits per second.
Two types of protocol may be used for streaming video. First is the Time Stream Protocol (RTSP). Another is the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP). Through this method, all data moving to a user’s machine over a network connection is streamed at a speed that depends on the network connection.
But before video can be transmitted across the internet for streaming, it must first undergo a process known as encoding. Encoding is defined as the process by which the video file is converted into a format that is suitable for digital transfer. Special software applications that convert the video into a digital file that can easily be broken down into data packets and sent across an internet connection are used for encoding. After encoding, the resulting digital file is stored on an internet-connected server and either embedded into a web page or made available for download.
